According to industry sources, tightening of policy rates by major central banks, including the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), would dampen demand in the next six to eight months. It would also have a bearing impact on the global economy which is yet to reach the pre-pandemic level. To tame inflation, several central banks including the United States (US) Federal Reserve, Bank of England and RBI have hiked their benchmark lending rates. The Federal Reserve has raised lending rate by 0.50 per cent. The RBI in an off-cycle action hiked the repo rate by 40 basis points (0.40 per cent). Among other major central banks, Bank of England and Reserve Bank of Australia increased interest rates by up to 25 basis points. As per sources, inflation was mainly on account of supply constraints, which has worsened due to the the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
