Barclays India’s managing director and chief economist Rahul Bajoria expects the government to estimate a fiscal deficit of 6.5 per cent of GDP for 2022-23 in the upcoming budget. He believes that the government will continue to push economic recovery and budget a higher capital spending of around Rs.42 trillion. For the current fiscal, fiscal deficit is estimated to be revised upwards modestly to 7.1 per cent from 6.8 per cent budgeted for 2021-22. However, according to Bajoria, still the government is expected to continue to provide fiscal support to the economy. In fact, a bigger fiscal push now to support growth could help the government consolidate the deficit in the coming years, he added.
