CAD to rise to 1.3% of GDP in FY22: BofAS

Current account deficit (CAD) is expected to rise to 1.3 per cent of GDP or USD 40 billion in 2021-22 up from 0.9 per cent surplus last fiscal, according to Bank of America Securities (BofAS). The upsurge would be driven by rise in global commodity prices, led by crude, coal and metals. On the other hand, capital account surplus is expected to rise despite moderating foreign inflows and a steady foreign direct investment (FDI) on account of other sub-components faring better in 2021-22 than in 2020-21. The capital account is set to end the year with a surplus of USD 93 billion up from USD 64 billion in the previous fiscal. BofAS further stated that balance of payments (BoP) surplus will moderate to USD 53 billion in 2021-22 from USD 87 billion in 2020-21. The brokerage believes that BoP is strong enough to defend any US Federal Reserve taper impacts on the rupee and the bond yield.
