Need to provide livelihood opportunities in rural areas outside farming: Experts

Experts opine that non-farm activities need a big push to boost rural incomes, reported Business Standard. The latest findings of the Land and Livestock Holdings of Households and Situation Assessment of Agricultural Households survey, conducted by the National Statistical Office (NSO), shows that incomes from crop production have dropped amid increased debts while wages have become the mainstay for rural households. Nearly 50.2 per cent of the agricultural households were indebted. Their outstanding debt averaged at Rs.74,121 per household in 2018-19 compared to Rs.47,000 in 2012-13. With the landholding size shrinking further, experts have stressed on the need to shift more people out of farming to the non-farm sector, where income opportunities can be tapped through skilling and training. In addition, an overhaul of policy to diversify the crop sector through promoting more high-value products that generate higher incomes is also needed, they added.
