Outlook for manufacturing sector improves in Q2FY22: FICCI survey

The outlook for increased manufacturing activities during July-September 2021 has significantly improved, according to a survey by Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). Around 61 per cent respondents reported higher production in the second quarter of 2021-22 as compared to 24 per cent during the corresponding period of the previous fiscal. The overall capacity utilisation in manufacturing also surged to 72 per cent during July-September, which again reflects a recovery in manufacturing. However, the survey noted that cost of doing business and production remain a cause for concern for the sector. The cost of production as a percentage of sales for manufacturers in the survey rose for 80 per cent respondents during April-June. This is much higher than that reported during January-March, where 72 per cent respondents recorded increase in their production costs. Industry respondents have attributed the rise in productions costs primarily to high fixed costs, higher overhead costs for ensuring safety protocols, drastic reduction in volumes due to lockdown, lower capacity utilisation, high freight charges and other logistic costs, increased cost of raw materials, power cost and high interest rates.
