Third wave may trigger downward revisions to India's GDP growth projections: Gita Gopinath

The second wave of Covid-19 pandemic in India was catastrophic, unlike in other countries, and hit the confidence hard. This led the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to revise its India’s real GDP growth forecast for 2021-22 downwards to 9.5 per cent, explained IMF chief economist Gita Gopinath. She warned that the growth projection could be downgraded further if the next wave of the pandemic resulted in another set of lockdowns in the country. Gopinath pointed out that according to the IMF’s latest World Economic Outlook report, advanced economies were expected to show an uptick in their growth rate, while emerging economies were in the negative. An inequity in distribution of Covid-19 vaccines among countries is one of the reasons for divergence of their growth projections, she noted. The chief economist also suggested that the central government must provide greater cash support to lower-income households in India.
