World Bank Group Chief Economist suggests less extreme lockdown for India

by Nidhi Bhati

In an interview to Economic Times, World Bank Group Chief Economist Carmen Reinhart has suggested a less extreme lockdown that allows for more flexibility in view of the country’s large informal economy. Reinhart pitched for a faster rollout of vaccines and other measures such as social distancing and the likes to contain the pandemic. She further cautioned that the constrained fiscal capacity coupled with limited monetary policy room is likely to hit the economy hard. It is important for the government to take good stock of the state of businesses because the last thing India needs for recovery is to face a credit crunch, Reinhart said.
