Government needs to balance farmer, consumer interests: Assocham

MSP hike expected to push up inflation

by Natasha Nadkar

The government is likely to be in a tight rope walk situation in managing the conflicting interests between farm producers and consumers in view of the Budget announcement on minimum support price (MSP) of crops, according to Assocham president Sandeep Jajodia. In the Union Budget 2018-19, the government has promised to offer a MSP which is 50 per cent higher than the cost of production. The Assocham president believes that the Budget has raised expectation level in rural landscape with a huge focus on agriculture. The entire national discourse has shifted to problems of rural India. He further said that the government would find it difficult to adjust MSPs which do not appear to be in line with promises. The MSP hike could push up retail inflation as the formula for costing is also being debated. The overall CPI inflation is expected to cross RBI’s limit of four per cent.
