Centre to launch Make in India 2.0 in February 2018

To focus on futuristic segments

by Nidhi Bhati

The central government is planning to launch the second round of ‘Make in India’ programme in February 2018, as per a report in Economic Times. Under Make in India 2.0, the department of industrial policy & promotion (DIPP) will focus on futuristic sectors such as robotics, genomics, chemical feedstock and electrical storage. The DIPP will draft a five-year vision document for each identified sector. The government plans to utilise existing mechanisms to collate information and devise strategies. It is not in favour of forming new committees for this purpose. The Make in India was first launched in September 2017 with focus on 25 sectors. The announcement for version two comes at a time when the manufacturing sector seems to have lost steam. The CSO recently projected the manufacturing sector to grow at 4.6 per cent in 2017-18 as compared to 7.9 per cent in last fiscal.
