Centre mulls PSU stake sale to maintain FY18 fiscal deficit

Rising crude oil prices & uncertain GST collections add pressure

by Arjit Singh Bhambra

The central government is expecting to garner more revenue from disinvestment of PSUs on account of favourable market conditions to maintain its fiscal deficit target for 2017-18, as per an article in Hindu Business Line. Rising global crude oil prices and uncertainty over GST tax revenue collections are adding pressure on the government. The government has an ambitious target to raise Rs.725 billion from stake sales in PSUs in the current fiscal, including Rs.150 billion from strategic disinvestment and Rs.110 billion from listing of public sector insurers. Of this, the government has already raised Rs.301.9 billion and expects to raise another Rs.100 billion from the launch of Bharat-22 ETF. A number of stake sales in PSUs have also been lined up, apart from strategic disinvestment in Air India, Engineering Projects (India) and Central Electronics.
