Commerce minister insists on permanent solution to world food security

Reiterates Indias commitment to WTOs Doha Round agenda

by Arjit Singh Bhambra

The commerce & industry minister, Suresh Prabhu, has reiterated India’s commitment towards lowering trade barriers in agriculture as agreed in the Doha Round. The minister was leading a discussion on behalf of the developing countries at the informal WTO mini-ministerial gathering in Marrakesh, Morocco. While outlining the disproportionately large subsidies being provided by the developed countries, the minister added that efforts should be made to avoid further widening and perpetuation of the imbalance between developed and developing countries. He emphasized that a permanent solution on the issue of public stock-holding for the purpose of food security would provide a strong signal of determination to end hunger and achieve food security, as mandated in the UN Sustainable Development Goal 2. The minister also stressed on the importance of suitable, special and differential provisions.
