Hike to come into effect from 1 July 2017

by Nidhi Bhati

The Union Cabinet, on 12 September 2017, increased the dearness allowance (DA) and dearness relief (DR) by additional one per cent with effect from 1 July 2017. The release of the additional instalment represents an increase over the existing rate of four per cent of the basic pay or pension. The move is likely to benefit 4.9 million central government employees and 6.1 million pensioners in the country. It will cost the exchequer Rs.30.6 billion per annum and Rs.20.4 billion in the financial year 2017-18 (for a period of eight months from July 2017 to February 2018).
