Healthcare & education exempted from GST

Telecom, financial service to be taxed at 28%

by Janhavi Behere

The GST council decided on a four-slab structure for services under the GST. Services will be taxed at five per cent, 12 per cent, 18 per cent and 28 per cent. Finance minister Arun Jaitley has stated that tax rate for most services has been maintained at current levels or has been lowered. Services that are currently exempted such as traveling on metro, local trains and religious travel will continue to remain outside the ambit of GST. The council has still not decided the tax rate for gold, bidis and cigarettes. The next GST meeting has been scheduled to take place on 3 June 2017.
