The GST council approved rates for about 1,211 items on 18 May 2017. Assuring that the GST will not be inflationary, finance minister Arun Jaitley announced that around 60 per cent of the items will be taxed at either 12 per cent or 18 per cent. Taking into consideration the food consumed by the poor, food grains, cereals, milk, jaggery, fruits & vegetables have been exempted from the tax. Rates for gold and services will be decided today.
