GST council approves SGST and UT-GST bills

Decides to cap sin tax on aerated drinks, luxury cars at 15%

by Janhavi Behere

GST council approved the remaining two bills: State GST (SGST) and Union Territory GST (UT-GST) on 16 March 2017. Earlier, the council had approved the CGST and IGST laws[see]. The council capped cess on aerated drinks and luxury cars at 15 per cent. The cess on pan masala and tobacco has been capped at 135 per cent and 290 per cent, respectively. Finance minister Arun Jaitley said that the cess will be restricted to only five commodities. The laws await Parliament’s approval and the SGST law would require ratification from state assemblies. The council will approve four rules relating to composition, transition, input tax credit and valuation in its next meeting. Fitment of different commodities in the four slabs is yet to be decided.
