Mahesh Vyas is Managing Director and CEO of Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy Pvt Ltd.
He is the chief architect of CMIE's proprietary databases. He created the Consumer Pyramids database by setting up the largest, fastest and technologically the most advanced household survey in India. Besides other applications of this database, he initiated and created the first set of fast frequency macroeconomic indicators (unemployment and consumer sentiments), from a private agency in India.
Other recent works include creation of new and innovative measures of investment trends in the country by exploiting a unique database of investment intentions created by CMIE. An innovative method for estimating poverty developed by him was included in the Rangarajan Committee report on poverty in 2014.
His early works include a methodology to estimate market share of individual companies which included competition to Indian companies from imports; a daily total equity market returns estimation methodology that included all frequently traded companies on a day where such a number was variable.
Building large and integrated databases and harnessing such databases into industry applications have been Mahesh's constant passion in his professional career.
He honed CMIE's traditional monitoring machinery and expanded it several fold to meet the growing needs of a rapidly changing market. A principal component of this effort was to build a large and integrated database of all aspects of the Indian economy.
As MD and CEO of CMIE for over 20 years, he strategised and engineered the company's transition from a private think tank to a database company and then into a database-oriented business solutions company.
Mahesh serves as an independent director on Geojit BNP Paribas Financial Services Ltd. Earlier, he was an independent director on Centurion Bank and on Quantum Asset Management Company Ltd. He was a member of the High Level Committee to Examine Auditor-Company Relationship set up by the Department of Company Affairs in 2002; a member of the Advisory Panel on Transparency Standards and of the Technical Sub-group on Data Dissemination Standards set up by Reserve Bank of India in 2007; a member of Working Group for Development of Methodology for Compilation of Index of Industrial Production in 2012, and a member of Expert Group to Review the Methodology for Measurement of Poverty in 2014.
