Rapid MetroRail Gurgaon Ltd (RMGL) has received three coaches for its Rapid Metro project in Gurgaon, Haryana. Three coaches make one train set and a total of five such trains will run in Gurgaon under the Rapid Metro project. The coaches have been imported from CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co Ltd in China. Trial runs for Rapid Metro are expected to begin from October 2012.
RITES Ltd had carried out the feasibility study for the development of a Mass Transit System in Gurgaon in September 2007. Based on the report, Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA), invited bids for Design, Engineering, Finance, Construction, Operation and Maintenance of the metro link on Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) Basis. A consortium of IL&FS Transportation Networks Ltd, ITNL ENSO Rail ystems Ltd and DLF Metro Ltd was awarded the project in July 2009 for a concession period of 99 years. A Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) named RMGL was later formed to implement the project. Financial closure for the Rs. 11 billion project was achieved in June 2010.
The Rapid metro link under phase I will cover a length of 6.1 km from Delhi Metro Sikandarpur Station on M G Road to National Highway 8 in Gurgaon. The line will have six stations. It will pass through Sikandarpur, DLF Phase-II, Belvedere Park, DLF Phase -III, Gateway Towers and Mall of India stations. The Rapid Metro trains are expected to begin operations in March 2013.
Haryana Urban Development Authority is planning to extend the metro route from Sikandarpur to Sector 56-57, in Gurgaon under Phase II. The proposed seven km long route will connect the Delhi Metro Line 2 (Central Secretariat-Gurgaon) at Sikandarpur and is expected to have nine stations. IL&FS Rail Ltd (IRL) is reported to have emerged as the sole bidder for Phase II.
