Centre may hike service tax rate in Union Budget of 2017-18

To consider such a move in case GST rollout delays beyond 1 April 2017

by Natasha Nadkar

The Centre may increase the service tax rate in the upcoming Union Budget of 2017-18 in case GST implementation is delayed beyond 1 April 2017. As per an official, there is no such concrete proposal at present. A higher rate will improve tax collections leading to additional revenues and bring it closer to the proposed standard rate under GST. The Centre and the states had struck a consensus on the rate of the GST on 3rd November 2016. [see here] The official further added that such a move will have to be examined closely and notified immediately since it can be considered inappropriate to tweak the indirect tax structure just a few months prior to the GST rollout.
