SC dismisses TG govt plea on Krishna issue

Details of redistribution to be decided by Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act of 2014

by Ericka Sequeira

On 9 January 2017, the Supreme Court (SC) dismissed the petition filed by the Telangana (TG) government against the Krishna Water Dispute Tribunal 2 (KWDT) verdict that restricted the redistribution of around 1,004 thousand million cubic feet (tmc ft) of water that was allotted to the then undivided Andhra Pradesh (AP), among residuary AP and TG (See).

The court refused the state government’s petition and had earlier said that the details of the redistribution of Krishna Water would be decided according to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act of 2014 by an apex council headed by top officials. The SC said that it will not go through the entire process of considering a fresh petition on the water issue.

The TG government, in its petition said that it is faced with an inadequate utilization of Krishna water from the total of 811 tmc ft allocated to it by the KWDT 1. The allocation made by the KWDT 2 to the state has also been inadequate.
