Uttar Pradesh is the most populous State in India. It accounts for over 16 per cent of the country's population. As per the census 2001, population of this State was 166 million. Encompassing an area of 2,40,928 square kms, it is the fourth largest State covering nine per cent of the country's geographical area. The State comprises of 70 districts. The density of population is around 689 persons per square kilometre.
