Punjab, with its plenitude of agricultural produce, is called India's food basket. It produces 20 per cent of India's wheat and 12 per cent of the country's rice. The Green Revolution's success in Punjab led the state in becoming highly agriculturally productive. This was followed by the White Revolution in 1969-70, which helped Punjab become one of the country's largest milk producers.
Punjab occupies 1.5 per cent of India's total land area and houses 2.35 per cent of the country's population, Punjab's State Domestic Product (SDP) forms around 3 per cent of India's GDP and has been growing at above 6 per cent since 2006. According to 2005-06 figures, services held the largest share of 44 per cent in Punjab's SDP, followed by agriculture with 33 per cent and the industrial sector with 23 per cent. The maximum growth, however, has been in the secondary sector, particularly in the construction segment.
The state boasts of four hydro power plants and four thermal power plants. Punjab is drained by three perennial rivers which provide input for the hydel power projects. It is among the first few states with 100 per cent road connectivity of rural areas. Around 97 per cent of the gross sown area is well-irrigated. Small scale industries dominate the industrial sector, generating around 47 per cent of the industrial production. The primary industries in Punjab are textiles, auto components manufacturing, and agro-based industries. The textile industry alone contributes 21 per cent to the manufacturing output and 24 per cent to industrial employment.
