In 2002, CMIE was awarded a prestigous contract to collect industrial production statistics on behalf of the Government of India.CMIE continues to collect such statistics and thereby contributes to the improvement of the country's statistical system.
The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion is responsible for the compilation of monthly production statistics. These statistics are used by the Central Statistical Organisation to generate the official Index of Industrial Production. The DIPP list of items account for over 50 per cent of the weight of the IIP.
The DIPP has contracted CMIE to collect these production and related statistics on its behalf. CMIE has been mandated to prepare and maintain the frame in respect of each of the products. The products in question are manufactured items. CMIE uses its rich firm-level database and its extensive monitoring machinery to ensure that the frame is updated regularly.
CMIE collects monthly production statistics from several thousand manufacturing units across the country. These unit-wise statistics are not available for public consumption. They are provided to the DIPP who in turn provide these to the CSO.
CMIE's efforts at collecting these statistics have improved the response rate.
